Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Power

Submitted by on November 25, 2009 No Comment

Solar energy is a topic that is gaining attention of people, media as well as advocacy groups to Obama administration. What is the main cause of interest in solar energy? While there are many advantages associated that impress so many people, there are also negative points. If you learn skills and willing to put in your efforts, the disadvantages can be minimized.

Solar Power

Let us first discuss Advantages

Unlimited energy source

The solar energy supply from the sun is guaranteed all the time. Sun produces energy every day which is no doubt a reliable source. This is for sure that fossil fuels like oil and natural gas will run out someday, but the solar energy will remain available until the sun is available. As the availability will of fossil fuel will become more difficult in future due to its scarcity, the research on alternative sources is necessary in order to avoid rising prices. On the other hand electricity produced from solar energy will never be interrupted and the cost of acquiring this technology is reducing day by day.

Free source of energy

The solar power is a free resource as long as our sun is shining. Apart from some basic costs like battery replacement, in case batteries were used in the system, there is no other recurring expense involved in solar power. If you handsomely install enough number of solar panels, you will be free from the electricity billing of the power company. Solar power can enable off grid living, an idea worth considering. The idea is worth a little more when you sell your extra energy to the grid/power company, enabling you to earn additional money.

Say no to greenhouse gasses

Solar energy is the best option for those who are extremely concerned about global warming. Fossil fuels like natural gas and oil produce plenty of greenhouse gasses, but solar power is free from such effects. Solar electricity is the best way to reduce carbon footprint. Solar power is free from any king of emission.

Low dependency on foreign oil

Dependency on other countries for oil is also considered as one of the prominent security threats today. Use of solar power can reduce dependency on foreign oil to a greater extent. With proper planning and sincere implementation, domestic production of solar power can replace all forms of power produced through foreign oil.

Solar Power

Now we look at some disadvantages

Initial cost of implementation

The initial cost is considered as the biggest obstacle in promoting solar electricity. The investment in terms of solar panels can be considerably high, while the recurring costs of solar electricity are fairly small. By learning skills and gaining proper knowledge, the obstacle of initial cost can be overcome by building your own solar panels.

Requirement of space

Solar panels are fixed in slanted position so their direction is towards the south. Solar panels need plenty of space too. Solar panels are ideal for areas that get ample sunlight. The available solar maps can be had to identify the average sun in your area. A larger score ensures greater production through a solar panel of the same size which produces lesser electricity in low score areas. In low score areas, more panels are needed to generate sufficient electricity for your house.

After having a detailed look on both advantages and disadvantages of solar electricity, you can realize that advantages are more than disadvantages. This can motivate you to have your own solar panels.
